Longvew, Tx (News-Journal.com) — As Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott tries to distinguish himself from other Republicans who also could seek the GOP nomination for governor, the News-Journal mined Tuesday for gems he might produce.
Abbott said he was out ahead of the GOP in bonding with the Latino community, a need the national party has recognized as critical to continued Republican dominance and even its survival.
Abbott’s wife Cecilia’s grandparents were Mexican immigrants.
“I’ve been united with the Hispanic community 31 years through marriage,” he said Tuesday at Horaney’s farm and home supply store in Longview.
“And I understand the Hispanic culture deeply,” he said. “I think the very foundation my marriage is based on is the same foundation on which to build the Republican Party. ... I think there’s something new — the young, Latino community understands what the Republican Party stands for.”
