(KETK) - Tyler Tx — Sports are a great way for students and teens to stay healthy and have fun while learning important team building skills.
But what happens when they get hurt with a concussion?
"I think this has probably come to the forefront as one of the most severe things that we need to take a look at," said Tyler Independent School District Athletic Director, Rod Kaspar.
Concussions are one of the most dangerous injuries for sports players and they are all too common right here in East Texas.
One hospital found a new way to tackle the problem.
Instead of waiting until the student athlete gets a concussion, they test each athlete before they take the field.
"Ideally what you do is you test the kids pre-season when their, quote, normal, and then if they have a concussion later you have a baseline test to compare to," said Sports Medicine specialist, Charles Williams.
Kaspar says concussions are not to be taken lightly.
"I think it's the number one concern that we have in athletics right now," Kaspar said.
