Ohio (KETK) — Ariel Castro, 53, who pleaded guilty to kidnapping three women and holding them for 10 years, was sentenced on Thursday afternoon to life in prison without the possibilty of parole. He was also ordered to have absolutely no contact with the victims or his daughter under any circumstances.
Castro spoke at at his sentencing hearing saying he is a very happy person inside and believed he is addicted to pornography to the point he was impulsive and the addiction made him lose it.
Castro said he knew what he did was wrong, but he argued the accusations made by Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus that he would come home and beat them are wrong.
Castro went on to say he is not the monster the prosecution is trying to paint him as. Castro said he is just sick, like an alcoholic. He added he never tortured the women and most of the sex was consensual.
At one point during the sentencing, Castro turned to the families of the victims and said he was truly sorry for what he had done.
Judge Michael Russo argued with Castro over his definition of a predator and told Castro the conditions he had the women living in were inhumane. He went on to tell Castro he had extreme narcissism bringing up the fact that even Castro's wife had been abused, suffering multiple broken noses at his hands. Russo also told Castro, "In your mind, there was harmony and a happy household, I'm not sure there's anyone else in America who would agree with you."
Knight, 32, one of the girls kidnapped by Castro, spoke to him in the court saying, "Your hell is just beginning, you will die a little every day." She concluded her statement by telling him, "May God have mercy on your soul."
DeJesus and Berry were not present in courtroom but had statements read on their behalf.
Judge Russo ended with the comment, "Castro will never leave the jail for any reason, these sentences are meant to punish you."
