Cherokee County, Texas (KETK) — A Cherokee County woman is in stable condition after shooting herself in the chest, Wednesday night.
At around 9:00 p.m., Cherokee County 9-1-1 dispatchers answered a call from a 59-year-old woman who advised that she had accidentally shot herself in the chest. Dispatch kept the woman on the phone while deputies and East Texas Medical Center.
EMS responded to the residence which is located on CR 3143 near the South end of Lake Jacksonville.
When officials arrived on scene, they had to force the locked door open to get to the woman. Deputies verified that no other people were in the residence and cleared the scene for EMS to enter the house.
EMTs and Deputies found the woman lying on the living room couch with a single gunshot wound to her upper right chest near her shoulder.
EMTs advised that it appeared to be a through-and-through shot, and she had lost quite a bit of blood. EMTs requested ETMC Air-1 be dispatched to fly the woman to ETMC Trauma Center in Tyler.
The woman was taken to a landing zone that had been established in a field at the intersection of FM2138 and CR3108.
Deputies and investigators remained at the residence investigating the incident and attempting to make contact with family members.
A High Point, 9mm semi-automatic pistol was one of the items collected from the residence.
An investigator from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office went to the hospital in Tyler to follow up with the victim; However, due to her injuries, medical personnel advised that she probably would be sedated until sometime Friday.
While the investigation is ongoing, the identity of the woman is not being released. The last status update of her condition was early Thursday morning, at which time, she was stable.
