BROWNSVILLE. TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — Isaiah Garza and another former Mercedes High School student were involved in a serious wreck while exiting Expressway 83 Tuesday evening. Garza, a star quarterback at Mercedes High, is in critical condition after suffering broken vertebrae in his neck.
Mercedes Superintendent Daniel Treviño says Garza had to undergo surgery.
“Isaiah can communicate, he was conscious early yesterday evening. Of course, he did undergo surgery, so we are waiting on the outcome of that particular procedure.”
Garza is currently being treated for serious injuries at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.
Head Coach Mike Uribe says Garza’s absence from the football field is already profound.
“What he means to us is invaluable, his leadership, his work ethic, his commitment, his sacrifice, his character, not to mention his tremendous athletic ability. It’s invaluable to us, and he’s going to continue to be a force and spirit with us.”
Since his freshman year, Garza has played for the Tigers baseball team as a center fielder and also showcased his talents on the pitcher’s mound. While the coaches and players prepare for the upcoming football season, the main concern is for the recovery of their quarterback and friend.
“The doctors told us to be patient and wait after to see the response of the procedures he had done. His health and his safety and his recovery is our paramount priority,” Uribe said.
While the results of the surgery won’t be available until later this week, Garza’s family and friends can only wait and hope for the best.
