Tyler, Texas (KETK) —
According to ESPN Central Texas , the family of Tyler native and Texas A&M quarterback, Johnny Manziel, has hired a west Texas lawyer with NCAA ties.
Jim Darnell , whose law office practices in El Paso, will be representing the family amid allegations Manziel signed autographs for profit in a Miami hotel room before Alabama faced Notre Dame in the BCS title game.
Darnell, an Oklahoma City native and SMU and Dartmout alum, represented Baylor University in the early 2000's when they were facing sanctions and former USC basketball coach Tim Floyd.
If reports deem true, Manziel would be in direct violation of NCAA rules.
The Manziel family will not publicly comment about the case to remain in compliance with the NCAA investigation.
The Aggies have also hired Birmingham, Alabama, law firm Lightfoot, Franklin and White as the quarterback's counsel.
The firm famously represented Auburn Heisman winner, Cam Newton in 2010 and kept his eligibility alive. Newton never sat any games.
