Harrison County, Texas — An old scam is new again.
Residents of Harrison County are receiving green cards that have a semi-official look to them.
The card states that the person on the card will receive a "pending cash grant claim of $20,978 (DOE)" and an official appearing "warning" on the front.
This is an old scam and one of the first. The scam asks the bearer to contact a telephone number and typically it is an 800 number, and disclose the release code printed on the card.
If you call that number, you will instructed by the person answering the phone to send $12 to $25 in a money order to P.O. Box number.
Then the person will advise you that "further documents will follow and a "packet will arrive COD in the amount of $25."
But the packet will never arrive and the person has made the first payment in anticipation of further funds.
Sheriff McCool is warning this as an absolute scam and citizens should not respond to the postcard. There is no United States grant that will seek out a person for payment of fund.
All grants must be applied through an official process and this is scam.
