Longview, TX (Longview News-Journal) — Gregg County hit delete on its cellphone policy Monday and enacted stipends for approved employees beginning Oct. 1.
“We’ve looked at this for several years,” County Auditor Laurie Woloszyn said. “Many, many counties have gone to the allowance rather than be in the cellphone business.”
This year, 231 of the county’s 575 employees use a county-issued cellphone, most of them in addition to their personal cells, Woloszyn said.
Commissioners routinely hear requests from one or other employee or elected official who need additional minutes on their plan or money to cover an unusually high bill created by county business. Each also is billed to the county, creating an administrative cost on top of the monthly bills.
The new policy will add $30, $40 or $50 to paychecks for approved employees to supplement their personal phones.
