Tyler , TX (KETK) — Summer is winding down.
You may be taking one of those last minute vacations.
But, police say during this time of year, make sure your house is secure.
The car is packed, the hotel is booked, and you and your family are ready for that last summer getaway.
And you can't help bragging about it on Facebook that you will be spending a nice long week with your family somewhere far from home.
But, police are warning that blasting your plans on social media websites can make you a target for a home invasion
"Try not to post it on Facebook o were going on vacation so if people are perusing they are looking for people that say hey I'm going to be gone and target your house," said Officer Don Martin.
Martin with the Tyler Police Department says burglars are usually looking for items they can sell quickly on the streets or in pawn shops.
"Jewelry, electronics items as well they do take weapons."
Don Green owner of Global Alarm Systems says they see lots of activity with their alarm systems during the summer.
"Longer days warmer nights the kids have more free time."
Green says when going on vacation make sure your alarm system is running smoothly, and have dead bolts on all their doors.
"There are just things they look for.''
Green says they set up motion sensors in the house and triggers that will call the police department right a way.
"In a burglary, it sends us an alarm signal with the name and address and police authority but it also sends a 10 second video of what tripped the alarm."
