Longview — The state lawmaker for Gregg and Upshur counties told fellow Republicans in Longview Thursday he saw a slightly more conservative legislature in his recently concluded sophomore session in Austin.
Texas Rep. David Simpson, R-Longview, credited much of that conservatism to 30 or so first-time lawmakers who worked with him during the 140-day regular session and three special sessions.
“In many ways, my sophomore session in the Legislature was easier than the first,” Simpson told a small audience at Johnny Cace’s Seafood and Steakhouse. “And I’m not sure exactly why that was. I wasn’t the target, maybe because there were more targets available. People knew where I stood and knew they could work with me — maybe not on this bill but on that one.”
