Carthage, Texas (Longivew News-Journal) —
Two of the top Class 3A teams in the state were pretty evenly matched in their first scrimmage of the year Friday.
Quarterback Blake Bogenschutz’s touchdown pass to Tee Goree lifted No. 2 Carthage to a 7-0 win in a one-quarter live scrimmage against No. 6 Kilgore. Kilgore’s first-team offense scored two touchdowns to Carthage’s one in the controlled scrimmage portion of the evening before the live scrimmage.
“We knew we’ve got some places that we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Carthage coach Scott Surratt said. “I thought we moved the ball OK. But this is a pretty good matchup this early in the year because they’ve got a good team.”
Carthage looked sharp on offense while scoring in the live scrimmage, getting into the end zone on a 12-play, 83-yard drive punctuated by Bogenschutz’s 7-yard scoring toss to Goree. The University of Texas-San Antonio commit and Goree were responsible for every pass play on the drive as Bogenschutz hit 7 of 8 passes for 69 yards en route to the score.
Bogenschutz also hit Goree for a 16-yard score in the controlled portion of the scrimmage.
