Tyler, Texas — While high school football players are worried about which team they'll be playing this homecoming game, the ladies are usually more worried about the mums. These ribbons and flowers don't come cheap and since mums are better when they're bigger, they can get pretty expensive. Mums can cost almost 100 dollars.
Flowers aren't the only thing on your kid's checklist, many times they need a dress for the homecoming dance. The dress alone can sometimes cost anywhere from 200 to 800 dollars.
There are some ways local small businesses are trying to cut the costs.
Brenda Harden , owner of Weddings A to Z says they "Always have a huge selection of sale dresses, short, long, you name it. Then we accept name brands for consignment."
Kilgore Florist Tonyah Nichols owned a floral shop for 25 years, and during that time she saw a lot of parents and kids break the bank to buy the best mum. Nichols decided to transform her store into a homecoming shop called "Elegant Touch". Nichols sells cheaper mums for students and fellow florists.
She says, "Sometimes i'll just consign a few to them so they can make it through their homecoming that way they can take them and trim them save some money on their flowers on their glue, staples, and of course the labor."
