Tyler TX (KETK) — Your morning and evening commute to work in one East Texas city will get a little easier.
If you travel on W. Loop 323.
The Texas Department of Transportation is adding another lane on Loop 323 on both sides underneath the train overpass.
"It's something that's been needed done for a long time," said TxDot spokesperson Larry Krantz.
Most of Loop 323 has at least 6 lanes, three going in each direction.
Except underneath the Union Pacific Train overpass in between Elm and Bellwood.
"Pretty much from U.S. 69 N all the way around the Loop to Commerce on the East Loop is a 6 lane design except for this one area, and the purpose of this project is to eliminate that bottleneck forcing people to merge and forcing people to fan back out to continue north or continue south," said Krantz.
Krantz said this is a project they've been wanting to work on for years.
"Anyone who travels the west Loop will benefit."
But, they needed funding and approval from city groups and the railroad to move forward.
TxDot will build a temporary overpass for the train so the railroad can continue to operate.
Krantz said this is a win win for both TxDot the railroad and the people traveling on the Loop.
"They are willing to take it in the short term to get a new overpass out of it and we can benefit as well because we go from 4 to 6 lanes and that bottleneck will be eliminated."
And the daily travelers are relieved that some of the congestion will be eliminated very soon.
"Its crowded it would be good to have another lane."
"Anything that relieves traffic congestion would be great for the people of Tyler."
