Tyler , TX (KETK) — You might end up seeing a lot of firefighters around Tyler this weekend.
They are here for the 8th annual Firefighters Combat Challenge.
More than 200 firefighters from all over East Texas will be competing the next two days in a number of different challenges.
"The challenge is a competition with a purpose. and its so the public can see how hard their firefighters need to work at fires and how demanding the job is and what kind of shape firefighter need to be in," said operations manager for Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge Ron Beckman.
Firefighters from all over East Texas even as far as Canada will go through five different obstacles, mimicking scenarios firefighters face on a day-to-day basis.
"They will be dragging a body a 170 pound body is the last challenge they have to run up some towers pull some hoses all kinds of firefighting things," said Marketing/Communication Manager for Tyler Convention & Visitors Bureau Holli Conley.
The combat challenge has been around for 22 years, evolving out of a firefighting fitness test.
Now, Scott Firefighting Combat Challenge travels around the country.
They are on their 16th stop out of 18 and are excited to be back in East Texas.
"We're so happy to be back. The hospitality is great and we're looking forward to a great event," said Beckman.
Next year, the competition will be even bigger.
Tyler will be the host for the 2014 national combat challenge.
"We think it's a great community to show off to the world and firefighters love coming to Tyler to compete," said Conley.

Friday, October 4
-The Challenge will be 5:30pm-11pm
Saturday October 5
-Opening Ceremonies will start at 9:30am
-The Challenge will be 10am-3pm
The location of the event is Broadway Square Mall, right behind the Sears Auto Center
