Longview, Texas (KETK) —
According to other media sources, Pine Tree Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, Derek Fitzhenry, has confirmed he is the responsible party regarding the changing of the Pine Tree Athletic Policy concerning how situations dealing with felonies are handled.
Another media source reported Fitzhenry said he changed the policy in April 2013, and it was a "clerical error" that caused the information to not be updated on the PTISD website.
KETK has obtained a hard-copy of the original 2013-2014 PTISD Student Handbook which was handed out to students at the beginning of the school year, disproving this statement.
In this hard-copy, on page 55, it reads:
"Students charged with felony offenses will not be permitted to participate in PTHS athletics. Felony convictions will result in a one-year suspension."
Which is exactly what was online, before the afternoon of October 2, when the wording was altered.
Since KETK's exclusive report of the change on Tuesday, the district has since changed the felony policy back to the original statement.
In a statement sent to KETK from PTISD, they confirmed the alterations were made without administrative approval.
Superintendent Farler would not confirm to KETK if Fitzhenry was the one who made the alterations, and Board President Charley Peck said he was unaware of any admissions from the Athletic Director.
KETK has attempted to contact Fitzhenry, but to no avail.
