Trinity County, Texas (KETK) — A Trinity County man man was taken into custody this afternoon after a nearly five-hour standoff with local and state authorities at a house in the Lake L Subdivision.
At around 7:30 a.m., 911 operators received a call for help from an elderly woman claiming her ex-husband had broken into her home and was threatening to kill himself and the caller, along with her daughter if law enforcement arrived.
According to Sheriff Woody Wallace, the mother and daughter were able escape and barricade themselves into a back room with furniture against the door.
Once deputies arrived, Walker County SWAT and a Texas Rangers negotiation team were called in to assist.
While the suspect, Elmo Nelms, 81, of Trinity, was distracted, SWAT members were up able to sneak through the woods behind the home and rescue both hostages through a window safely.
Shortly after noon, an armored SWAT vehicle moved closer to the home, prompting Nelms, who was armed with a shotgun, to give himself up.
No injuries were reported and the women were released to family members.
Charges have not been filed at this time as authorities continue to investigate the incident.
This is not the first time deputies have been called to the home on a domestic disturbance, according to Wallace.
