Stephen F. Austin and Lamar University alum Oail Andrew "Bum" Phillips has pased away at the age of 90, according to multiple national media outlets.
Phillips who attended Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas before lettering in football at SFA, got his first coaching job at Jacksonville High School.
Phillips also served as an assistant coach at Texas A&M under Bear Bryant, the University of Houston, Southern Methodist University and Oklahoma State University. He was also the head coach at the University of Texas at El Paso.
Phillips was hired by Sid Gillman to serve as a defensive assistant coach for the San Diego Chargers. In 1973, Phillips took the defensive coordinator position for the Houston Oilers.
In 1975, Phillips was named head coach and general manager of the Oilers, and stayed there for five years making him the winningest coach in Oilers history. Phillps was also the head coach for the New Orleans Saints but resigned from coacing pro football in 1985.
"Bum's" son, ex-Dallas Cowboy's head coach Wade Phillips, serves as the defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans.
The cause of Phillips' death is unkown at this time.
