Tyler, Texas (KETK) — 25 years ago, the Robert E. Lee Red Raider football team earned the school’s first play-off berth and bi-district appearance in school history. Tyler ISD will celebrate the 25th anniversary of this achievement by honoring the players and coaching staff of the 1987 team during a pre-game ceremony on Friday, October 25 at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
In 1987, Coach Biff Peterson, in his second year as head coach of the Red Raiders, led the team to an 8-2-1 record as a bi-district finalist. It took 28 years for the Raiders to make the playoffs for the first time. Since the 1987 team broke through the barrier, Lee has made the playoffs 17 of the last 25 years. The 1987 team had seven senior players sign Division Ischolarships.
Team members and coaching staff from the 1987 team are asked to contact the Tyler ISD Athletics Office at 903-262-3081 to R.S.V.P. for the pre-game ceremony.
