SORRENTO, LA (THECREOLE.COM) — As of November 19, the Sorrento Police Department will no longer be covered by their liability insurance provider, according to Sorrento Mayor Mike Lambert.
This is reportedly the first time in Louisiana municipal history that this has happened.
The mayor and at least two council members are calling for the resignation of Sorrento's Chief of Police, Earl Theriot.
Sheriff Jeff Wiley has assured NBC33 that service and emergency calls will be responded to by his department for the immediate future, but the town of Sorrento would need to formulate a contract with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office for long-term service.
Calls to Theriot have not been returned, and he is reportedly out of the office for the day.
Sorrento Police have been in the spotlight recently, since Officer James Bell had been flagged over 700 times for speeding within a two month period.
