Tyler , TX (KETK) — Almost 600 pets have died and 3,600 pets are sick because of a mysterious illness linked to chicken, duck, and sweet potato jerkey treats.
The FDA says the treats causing an outbreak are made in China
Animal Medical Center's Dr. Laura Cauthen is seeing this problem right here in East Texas.
"I do recommend avoiding chicken and jerky treats.. especially those manufactured outside of the country," said Cauthen.
She also told me to watch your dogs and cats for symptoms like vomiting, tiredness, signs of kidney failure, drinking lots of water, and not eating all of the food from their food bowls.
Watch for those signs, especially if you've recently changed your dog's diet.
If you do notice any of these signs, its important to contanct your vet as soon as possible.
"If you're suspicious that your pet has been affected by a treat.. please keep that treat. please don't just discard them. it may be important that those treats be tested at a later time as we're trying to get to the bottom of this problem."
Vets will work along with the FDA, tracking and testing, until they find a solution.
