Longview — A charter school on the campus of the University of Texas at Tyler Longview Center is planning to move to its own facility for the 2014-15 school year, freeing up space for more college-level classes, officials said Wednesday.
The Innovation Academy began offering classes for students in third through sixth grades on the UT campus for the 2012-2013 school year. This fall, it added classes for seventh graders as part of its plan to add a grade every year until it was offering classes for grades 3-12. From about 60 students last year, it has grown to about 120 students this year, instruction leader Angela Ladine said.
While there are advantages to the school’s location on a university campus — such as a steady supply of student teachers and nursing students to work on projects with the children — Ladine said the relocation to a separate facility would enable the school to continue to grow.
