Longview — Federal desegregation policies have prevented a handful of parents from transferring their Longview ISD children to Johnston-McQueen Elementary School, site of the district’s only kindergarten that does not use the Montessori teaching method.
According to data from the district, 10 sets of parents have asked to transfer their children to the North Longview school at 422 FM 2751 since the 2011-2012 school year. Only one family requested the transfer for the purpose of enrolling their child in a traditional kindergarten program. Seven other transfer requests have been denied based on a federal desegregation order. An additional two requests have been denied due to lack of space, and one of the 10 intra-district transfers was approved.
The change occurred as a part of a 2011 decision when U.S. District Judge Leonard Davis signed the federal court order that ended the decades-old desegregation order on the school.
