Tyler , TX (KETK) — Cooler temperatures moved into East Texas this weekend which typically means good hunting, but was the kickoff of rifle season as good as expected?
East Texas hunter Ian Vestel had a great weekend out in Lindale.
"It went great, I had fun, I got out to walk around beautiful area and I collected a nice hog," said Vestel.
Even though Vestel will go home happy after a nice hunt, he still didn't see any deer.
Texas Parks and Wildlife biologist Chris Farrell says opening rifle weekend was just average.
"I wouldn't say a lot of deer were out moving this weekend, but enough.. some people saw 4 or 5, some people saw nothing.. just one of those chances you take hunting," said Farrell.
A total of seven deer were harvested in Lindale.
However, with the weather changing and good predicitons for the season, hunters can expect a pretty good year.
"I think as the weather cools down, it will get better, as the season goes on," said Farrell.
With an avergae turn out this weekend, Vestel says he will be back next weekend to Lindale no matter what...
"Great hunting area, wonderful people, wonderful people to work with out here... they always take good care of you."
