Tyler , TX (KETK) — The state of Texas has a statute that prohibits driving in the left laneof all roads with a minimum of four lanes unless you are passing someone, or turning left.
Montgomery and Fort Bend county's Department of Public Safety troopers will be on the roads Wednesday looking for violators.
Tommy Cross is a Texas truck driver who spends the majority of his week on the road, and he wants everyone to be aware of this law.
"Everybody will say well, i didn't know about it and most people probably don't know about it but then again you take the responsibility to drive so you should have the responsibility to know the law as to what you need to do," said Cross.
Cross believes the left lane isn't even safe to drive in, and thinks if an emergency were to happen, its in a driver's best interest to stay in the right lane.
"It is in their safety, its for everybody's safety, you know, everybody has somewhere to go if they're in the right lane."
KETK spoke with some East Texans to see what they thought about this law enforcement today.
"You know you're wanting to go the speed limit, but you have someone in front of you going 35... they need to get off the road."
"Well, it's the law isn't it? Yes sir...so why shouldn't people follow the law? Why should they enforce some laws and not all laws?"
And to some didn't even know there was a left lane law.
"No, i didn't know about the law... theres all kinds of laws we don't know about... its probably another way for the people who are supposed to protect and serve us to take in.. to take."
