Henderson — Members of the Rusk County Syrup Team crushed, cooked and stirred sugar cane Saturday all while laughing about jokes and stories now more than two decades old.
“We have a good time. We get to see each other once a year,” said Mark Wheat, the head cook of the team that serves as the signature attraction of the Heritage Syrup Festival in Henderson each November. “It is (hard to believe it has been 25 years), when we look back ... there is just one story after another.”
Wheat, Gary McDonald, of Fayetteville, Ark., and Lisa Cook worked the cane juice into syrup Saturday afternoon as hundreds of visitors passed by the demonstration in the pay-for-entry area of the festival.
