Hallsville — More than 3,000 Hallsville ISD junior high and middle school students and staff lined the road Monday shouting thanks and waving flags as veterans drove through as a makeshift parade.
The celebration followed a ceremony that included music from school’s sixth-grade choir, the pledge of allegiance, and a speech by veteran Jeff Shelton. It was one of about 10 observances at area schools across the region to honor Americans who have served in the military. Longview, Kilgore, Ore City, Henderson and other districts also celebrated servicemen and women.
“Without them we may not get the right to go to school, or we may not have the right to own our own homes; without them we wouldn’t have a lot of this stuff,” said Garrett Crowley, 13, who stood near the front of line in Hallsville.
