Hallsville — More than 70 students from 18 schools in the Region 7 Education Service Center participated Monday in a new mock legislative assembly competition.
The contest, called “Congress,” models the democratic legislative process and is being piloted this year by the University Interscholastic League (UIL). Contestants have been preparing for the Congressional District competition since September by reviewing and researching pre-prepared legislation dealing with real-world social and political policies provided by the UIL, according to Region 7.
Melissa Witt, the speech and debate teacher at Hallsville High School, headed the District 7 committee for the contest, and she said participating students and schools are looking forward to debating in the pilot competition.
