Longview — Freedoms of speech, religion, the press, to trial by a jury — these are not guaranteed by poets, preachers, reporters or lawyers, a speaker told a crowd at a Veterans Day ceremony on the Gregg County Courthouse lawn Monday.
“It was and is the veteran who makes all that possible,” County Judge Bill Stoudt said. “It was the veteran who took up arms to secure our nation and protect our freedoms.”
Some 175 people gathered for Monday’s annual event, which included several bittersweet nods to longtime veterans advocate William Perkins. The past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1183 died in September, but not before telling his wife, Shirley, that he wanted the Veterans Day event to continue.
