TYLER, TEXAS (KETK) — High cost of groceries may be the reason why more people are growing a garden.
As gardens are blooming gardening is booming, because health benefits and to save money, and that's why more East Texans are choosing to eat from their backyard.
"It's a fun hobby and somewhat economical," says Deanna Olsen, Master Gardener.
More East Texas are getting creative in the backyard.
"Surveys have show that more and more people are growing a edible produce and plants in their yard every year," says Hansen.
Keith Hansen, Horticulturist from Texas A&M Agrilife tells us, they're seeing more East Texans signing up for gardening workshops even kids and young adults are getting involved in gardening.
KETK visited Hughes Plant Farm in Tyler to ask East Texans why they chose to garden.
Some folks tell us, there are healthful benefits to eating from your back yard.
A master gardener tells us it's a way to conserve God's resources, plus it's organic and picking from you garden can save you a lot of money in the long run.
"It's great for small children to learn how to and to actually learn where their food source comes from," says Olsen.
Hansen says, folks get discouraged because it can take some time, but East Texans say it's all worth it.
"You don't have to go out and dig the dirt you can come here and buy a bag of potting soil and dump it a five gallon bucket and put your seeds in and water it," says Tim Krizam, Landscaper.
