Tyler , TX (KETK) — It was only a little over a year ago that only sixty people sat in the sanctuary of Woodland Heights Baptist Church, and now hundreds of people come to the Jacksonville church to worship.
Senior pastor Donny Sadler says its because of their unique calling to people.
"Maybe people that have been burnt with church before needed a different environment, we created that, and they came," said Sadler.
As the numbers continued to grow, the church was in need of more space.
An older member told Sadler about the Texas Baptist Men church builders.
Sadler was skeptical at first, but now knows he made the right decision.
"There's something very neat about getting to have a relationship with them for two weeks and working side by side with them...we couldn't have got that with contractors," said Sadler.
The Texas Baptist Men is a group of retired men and their wives that build churches, and help build relationships with god.
"Our big motto is building for the glory of god...they work for a different reason, than what most people do, they work strictly for the lord, you know, they do his work," said Bill Pigott, director of the retiree builders.
While the men hammer away, the women spend time in the community.
They make gifts for the children and sing at local nursing homes.
"The biggest thing I like about them is the fact they're going to do something for the kingdom all the way 'til they leave this Earth," said Sadler.
Woodland Heights will soon have a new building, but more importantly the entire congregation has become a family.
