Kilgore, TX (ESC Region 7) — University Interscholastic League (UIL) Theatre Director Luis Munoz will be at Longview High School from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10 to present the major changes taking place in 2013-2015 in the UIL One-Act Play contest. Region 7 Education Service Center (ESC) is hosting the event, and Curriculum Coordinator Betty Steele encourages area theatre teachers and One-Act Play directors to register to attend.
“This is an amazing opportunity to work directly with Luis Munoz and learn from a master director of theatre,” Steele said. “Luis is recognized nationally for his directing excellence, and he values the importance of building relationships with teachers. We hope that our Region 7 theatre teachers will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.”
Teachers and directors interested in attending the UIL One-Act Play session may register online at https://misweb.esc7.net/ . The session number is 040114, and the registration deadline is Friday, Dec. 6. The registration fee is waived for teachers who work within member districts of the Region 7 ESC Fine Arts Cooperative, and all other Region 7 area teachers may register for a discounted fee of $100.
Numerous changes have been made to the One-Act Play contest, and Steele said Munoz will provide clarification regarding the changes, as well as give attendees the opportunity to ask questions.
“Teachers are extremely busy, and many of the UIL One-Act Play directors from our rural school districts carry the responsibility of teaching content areas other than theatre,” she said. “It is often difficult to find the time to drill down to the specificity of the rule changes. Understanding the competition rules is key to guiding students to a winning performance.”
In addition to reviewing the changes in the competition rules, Munoz will also offer training in directing and play selection strategies at the session.
“Teachers who attend this session will not only benefit from Luis’ expertise, but they will also get to connect with Region 7 area theatre teachers,” Steele said. “For the first time or novice director, this is a rare opportunity to interact with Region 7 master teachers and directors of the One-Act Play.”
