(KETK) - Tyler Tx — When the weather takes a dramatic drop, there are certain things you need to look out for, especially around your house. Two things many people often overlook are their pipes and gutters.
"We have a lot of water breaks this time of year," said Shannon Bearden, C.Woods Company.
When the temperatures get below freezing, it puts your pipes at risk.
"At night, everybody's still at home, the waters not moving, the pipes are easy to freeze and break," Bearden said.
So what can you do?
"Anything exposed needs to be insulated," Bearden said. "You can buy things to cover the outside of your house where the water hose connects, cover your pipes with blankets."
Another tip is to let your faucets drip at night, with both warm and cool water.
"It's harder for water to freeze while it's moving," Bearden said. "Than when everything's stopped."
And as for your gutters, it is important to cover them as well to keep them from getting clogged.
"Anytime the leaves are falling it's good to keep your gutters covered so you don't have to clean them out constantly," said John Stewart, Superior Roofing.
And this is the time of year you need to be worried about both your pipes and your gutters.
"About this time and maybe about a month ago it really started to build up on us," Stewart said.
And if you do not want to worry about checking yourself, both roofing companies and plumbers can assess your home and are ready to help.
"We do work through rain and everything else," Stewart said.
