(KETK) - Tyler Tx — From sleet to freezing rain, different icy mixtures can build up on your windshield overnight.
And it is the last thing you want to deal with before heading out to work. So here are some tips to make your life easier.
"The best way [to clear your windshield] is to get in early, start your car, turn on the defroster and go back inside and let it run for like 5 minutes," said Crews Fry, the store manager at Napa Auto Parts.
But, if the ice is heavier on your windshield, you want to use a scraper.
"If you have heavier icing problems, you want to use the de-icer and a scraper and scrape it off real slowly," Fry said. "And what you don't want to do is stick your head out the window thinking it will defrost eventually, and don't throw hot water on it, that's the worst thing you can do."
Also be sure your windshield wipers are not frozen and do not have ice built up under them.
That's the worst thing that can happen, because they won't work," Fry said.
And you may want to get your de-icer and scrapers while you can. KETK went around town in search of the best de-icing products and almost came out empty handed.
"We've sold out[of scrapers]," Fry said. "Our warehouse is out of Dallas and, of course, they've sold out."
"It was crazy, we had so many people coming in to buy the scrapers yesterday that today we're almost sold out," said Rudy Delgadillo, manger at Pep Boys Auto. "We sold about 80 units in two hours."
