NBC — An airline passenger falls asleep during a flight and wakes to find he's alone and locked inside that plane.
Now, the airline is investigating how it happened.
It wasn't the layover Tom Wagner was expecting.
Wagner, a Louisiana boat captain, boarded a united express flight to Houston, Friday, on his way to Los Angeles.
Wagner says he took his seat and fell asleep and woke up in Houston to an unusual sight.
Wagner says he tried the plane's door, only to find it locked, then used his cell phone to call his girlfriend, who thought he was joking.
Wagner says his girlfriend quickly called the airline.
After a half-hour, Wagner says maintenance workers opened the door and were shocked to find him inside.
He says United offered him a $250 voucher and a hotel room in Houston for the night. The company operating the United flight, ExpressJet, issued a statement saying:
"ExpressJet is investigating to determine how this occurred. we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this caused for the passenger."
Wagner is set to return to Louisiana on the same airline next week.
He says this time, he'll be prepared, he's going to get a good night's sleep before he heads home.
