Tyler TX (KETK) — You might be heading out of town this weekend for the holidays and you're excited and share it with your friends and family on Facebook and Twitter. But, you might want to think twice before posting your travel plans.Because you might come back to a burglarized house.
''You really don't need to announce to the world that you're gong out of town or leaving your house," said Tyler Police Officer Don Martin.
Martin said it's never a good idea to post where your going or when your leaving on social media. Sharing your travel itinerary on any social media website let's burglars know your house will be empty.
"That's why you do the extra step of leaving your lights on timers having your mail and newspapers picked up having your neighbors watch your house for you," said Martin.
Some people like Lloyd Chambers say this is something he never thought would happen.
"If I did put something on Facebook I probably wouldn't do it again because it helped the burglar out in the situation," said Chambers.
He now will share his get away excitement with people face-to-face.
"What I would do is take extra precautions and lock my windows and doors and stuff like that."
