(KETK) - Tyler Tx — This year will be the second time Fit City Tyler and NET Health bring you 'Lighten Up East Texas.' It is a community-wide weight loss challenge that promotes healthful eating and exercise.
"We're kicking off our second Lighten Up East Texas challenge," said George Roberts, CEO of NET Health. "We're challenging our community to lose five percent of their weight."
The challenge saw remarkable results last year, and this year they are hoping to see even higher numbers.
"Last year they lost a collective amount of over 4,700 pounds," Roberts said. "This year our goal is to have 5,210 entrants and have another goal of them losing 5,210 pounds."
You weigh-in in January and weigh-out in May.
"We're not there to judge how much or how little you weigh," Roberts said. "We're simply there to record your weight."
For every five percent of your body weight you lose, you are entered into a raffle to win a 2014 dodge dart, thousands of dollars worth of gift cards to Brookshire's and other smaller prizes.
"Up to 20 percent for four entries," Roberts said. "We're not promoting 'Biggest Loser,' we're promoting long term achievable weight loss."
The idea behind the challenge is to keep the community inspired and motivated.
"It is a fun way to be involved by offering incentives for people to lose weight, to get fit," said Rebecca Sanders, Director of Public Relations at Brookshire's Grocery Company.
