Longview — Jack Stallard is the Sports Editor of the Longview News-Journal.
He talked about his top plays and top players of the year with KETK Sports Director Danny Elzner.
Here is what Stallard said...
"When you cover sports in East Texas you'll cover some great kids, great teams and great coaches. There are a lot of great memories from 2013. Here are my favorite five.
First of all, Longview's Chris Davis. What a great season this kid had for the Baltimore Orioles. When he put it together, what a phenomenal season he had. Chris led the majors in home runs and runs batted in. He started in the All-Star Game. He took part in the Home Run Derby, finished third in the MVP voting and won the Silver Slugger Award.
Second on my list is the White Oak Roughnecks repeating as state champions. Ron Boyett does a great job. He took White Oak to the state tournament two years ago and won it. It was maybe a tougher feat to repeat that. They did. They finished 37-1. The Roughnecks are 74-2 over the last two seasons. It's a great program.
The Carlisle Indians went to the state tournament for the second year in a row. They lost two years ago. The Indians wanted to go back and prove that they were the best team. They did. They did it with Gunner Baker on the mound and a lot of good kids. Good baseball team.
Football in East Texas, you had two teams that hadn't been to the playoffs in a long time. Waskom and Union Grove both made the playoffs this season. Waskom hadn't been since 1992. Union Grove hadn't been since 1968. They both made the playoffs and they played each other in the first round.
The big one, Kilgore and Carthage playing for the 3A state championship. It guaranteed a state championship for East Texas. It was another great season for high school football and high school sports in general in East Texas."
