Lufkin, TX (KETK) — A Lufkin man was hit with a felony theft charge after stealing a turkey leg on Thursday afternoon.
Craig M. Calloway, 52, of Lufkin, reportedly took the turkey leg from an HEB store located on the 100 block of North Timberland Dr. on December 26th.
According to police reports, a store employee told officers that Calloway had purchased a beer, but had stashed a turkey leg in his jacket without paying for it.
Once outside the store, Callaway moved the turkey leg into the bag with his beer. He told Lufkin Police that he bought the turkey leg, but his receipt did not show the purchase. Calloway then claimed that a woman in the store bought it for him, but the employee indicated that nobody had paid for it.
He was arrested and charged with theft. However, due to the fact that he had three prior theft convictions, his charge was elevated from a misdemeanor to a third degree felony theft charge.
According to judicial records, Calloway has a lengthy history of theft and drug charges dating all the way back to 2003 in both Lufkin and Pittsburg, TX.
The turkey leg was valued at $3.88.
