Tyler, Texas (KETK) — An East Texan has been arrested in Mississippi in connection with a multi-state construction equipment theft ring.
Charles Alexander, of Timpson, is one of four people who were arrested Monday afternoon in Hinds County, Mississippi, after being found in possession of around $200,000 worth of stolen trucks, trailers, ATVs, back hoes and fiber-optic wires, according to the Hinds County Sheriff's Office.
Chief Deputy Chris Picou tells KETK he believes the equipment was being sold or was going to be sold on the black market.
"We found they had cut up a truck and were selling the parts as scrap metal and to my knowledge this kind of theft occurs when the suspects are looking to sell items illegally," said Picou.
Officials say most of the stolen items were out of Louisiana since the county is on the border of Mississippi and Louisiana.
The Hinds County Sheriff's Office received a tip from concerned citizens about suspicious activity and large amounts of equipment being held at a trailer home in the 1400 block of John Warren Road where Alexander was living. Upon arrival, deputies secured and executed a search warrant where they discovered the stolen items.
Picou says Alexander and three more suspects are being held in the Hinds County Jail awaiting their initial court appearance scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
Bond has not been set.
