TYLER, TEXAS (KETK) — First responders were on the scene of a fatal one-vehicle wreck that backed up traffic for hours, Friday night.
Smith County Department of Public Safety tells KETK that six people were involved, five were ejected from a vehicle after it rolled over on Highway 31.
DPS tells us a nine-year-old girl died on scene. Four children, one woman, and one man were injured in the crash that happened around 11:00 p.m., on Highway 31 East near County Road 233 Friday night.
The mother, an 11-month-old, 11-year-old, and 14-year-old are in stable condition.
DPS tells us that the driver, John Bates, 38, is in critical condition at this time.
None of the children were wearing seatbelts at the time of the wreck and the 11-month-old was also not in a car seat.
The names of the children will not be released due to their ages.
TxDOT is working to add additional passing lanes to Highway 31 East, they will begin constucition this month.
