Gregg County, Texas (KETK) —
A Kilgore man who allegedly tried to kill his father in May 2013 , has plead guilty to aggravated kidnapping.
The Gregg County District Attorney's Office tells KETK, Monday morning, William Lawson, 51, reached a plea deal with officials to drop the attempted murder charge in lieu of a guilty plea to aggravated kidnapping. The punishment phase in Lawson's trial will being Tuesday.
On Thursday, May 2, 2013, Kilgore Police responded to the 500 Block of Gladewater Street in reference to a suspicious vehicle/welfare concern.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Lawson and his father, Robert Emmett Lawson inside a pick-up truck. Officers noticed a strong smell of propane gas and observed signs on the truck windows that said “Danger Propane”. Officials spoke with Lawson, who threatened to ignite the propane and kill himself, his father and the responding officers. Police noticed the windows fogging up on the truck and with the assistance of the Kilgore Fire Department, Lawson and his father were removed. While law enforcement was trying to get the individuals out of the truck, Lawson was seen attempting strangling his father.
Lawson is being held in the Gregg County Jail.
