Tyler, Texas (KETK) —
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose award represents the best offensive college football player that either played high school or junior college football in Texas or was born in the state, and Bryce Petty is its inaugural recipient.
The winner was announced at a banquet Friday night at Willow Brook Country Club in Tyler and Earl Campbell himself was on-hand to give out the prestigious honor.
Other finalists for the award were:
Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M
Mike Evans, Texas A&M
Jace Amaro, Texas Tech
- James Franklin, Missouri
The award recognizes the player who meets the awards criteria and encourages student-athletes to succeed on and off the field while having the drive and the tenacity to persist and overcome adversity and injury in the pursuit of reaching their goals.
Petty, a fourth-year junior, led the Baylor Bears to their first ever BCS bowl game in 2013 and a secured a win over the Texas Longhorns to claim the BIG XII title. For the season, Petty completed 350 - 403 passes totaling 4,200 yards with a completion rate of 62 percent. He accounted for 32 touchdowns in the Bears' historic season. And the best part for the Bears, Petty will be back on the field for BU next year. With the return of Petty, a coach like Art Briles and a brand new stadium on the Brazos River, a second BIG XII banner may be in the works for Baylor, and perhaps, another Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
