Waco, Texas (KWKT) — The Waco Police Department took to the streets and to social media to ticket drivers violating traffic laws on Thursday. It’s all an effort to keep Wacoans safe on roadways and to make sure their rides deserve to see pavement.
Usually Sgt. Swanton of Waco PD is in his office or responding to major crimes, but on Thursday he was with traffic enforcement participating in a sting.
“In the first hour we were out this morning there were 18 traffic stops," said Swanton.
Officer Trojanowski posed as a homeless man watching for the most simple of traffic violations- outdated stickers, people not using seatbelts and red-light runners.
Fitted with a hidden surveillance camera and a 2-way radio, he would then alert nearby officers who made the stops.
Swanton said, “I've been amazed at the amount of people running red lights this morning at the intersections were at. We picked these specific intersections because they have been our most troublesome. ”
All day long Swanton was updating the public via Waco PD’s Twitter account and Facebook page- even giving heads up to his location beforehand and producing pictures of the traffic stops.
The numbers were alarming. In just two days, the department handed out 182 tickets, impounded eight cars and arrested eight drivers.
The whole point is to keep Wacoans safe.
“Honestly, I’ve been in the traffic unit for two years. I’d love to come to work and not write a ticket all day long." said Trojanowski.
"But, when you start working a lot of the fatality wrecks, and working wrecks that have children going to the hospital in, you see the necessity for having to stop people.”
And the department isn’t done. They may be out in the future, but if your ride is legal and you drive by the rules, police said you’ve got nothing to worry about.
