Longview — The Longview Police Department has launched an online recruting tool in an effort to draw more women to the force.
“This is just the start of what we hope to do,” Chief Don Dingler said Wednesday afternoon as he presented animal control Officer Chris Kemper with a certificate of appreciation for his work on a new website dedictated to the department’s women in blue.
The website highlights the women on the force and the roles they fill within the department, including patrol, K-9, detective and supervisory positions.
“The goal behind this web page is to encourage women to view policing as a viable career choice and, specifically, to be a part of the Longview Police Department,” said department spokeswoman Kristie Brian. “Recruiting women officers is not a problem unique to Longview.”
Brian said U.S. Department of Labor Statistics show in 2011 that women occupied 12 percent of the police officer positions in the country, and that number rose to 13 percent in 2013.
