Longview — Jack Stallard is the Sports Editor of the Longview News-Journal.
He talked with KETK Sports Director Danny Elzner about the death of longtime Longview basketball coach, Leroy Romines.
"Coach Romines was a legend, a true legend in East Texas," Stallard said. "He was inducted into the TABC Hall of Fame in 2009."
"Coach Romines won 714 games in his career, more than 400 of them at Longview," Stallard added. "He coached at Longview for 18 seasons. He only had two losing seasons. He won the state championship in 1992."
"He retired before I got to Longview," Stallard said. "I was the Sports Editor in Lufkin. I saw a whole lot a battles between Lufkin and his longtime friend, Jesse Walker."
"When those two teams got together it was great basketball," Stallard added. "Coach Romines was a good guy on and off the court."
"I never heard anybody say anything bad about him," Stallard said. "That's rare when you're in that profession for that long."
