CNN/WDEF — A Tennessee teenager who was allegedly paid to beat up another kid on video is now apologizing. The video went viral over the weekend, now, the 14 year-old is charged with aggravated assault, Erik Avanier reports.
That was the sight and sound of a tall 14 year-old who sucker punched a much smaller 13 year-old inside Hamilton Place Mall, leaving the young victim with a jaw that was broken in two places. Hours after the teen attacker was charged with aggravated assault, we spoke with him at his home.
Because he is still a minor we are not showing his face and because this is an active case, the teen is limited in what he can say.
Voice of Teen Suspect, "When you're doing it, you don't really think about the consequences. You just try to act cool and then whenever you do get in trouble for it, you realize you shouldn't have done it."
Given the nature of this crime and how it was planned, allegedly paid for and purposely recorded and posted to the web, there's a chance prosecutors might try to have the case transferred from juvenile court to adult criminal court and once the criminal case is finished, his grandmother who is his legal guardian could face a lawsuit.
Grandmother, "I have a home, I have four other grandchildren that I have custody of; the youngest is two. We are not rich by any means and I realize we could lose everything because of this."
By court order, the 14 year-old is not allowed to contact his victim or the victim's family, but he wanted to use this interview to publicly apologize to the person he injured, "I'm very sorry for what I did. I shouldn't have done it. It was wrong. I wasn't thinking at the time but now I realize that I have to face the consequences for what I did. I'm sorry."
