Mineola, Tx (KETK) — The City of Mineola and the Texas State Parks and Wildlife are currently in the early planning stages of a new paddling trail. "We felt like this would be something good for others to enjoy as well as our citizens," said Mercy Rushing, Executive Director of Economic Development for the city of Mineola. This is all part of the Mineola preserve on the Sabine River. East Texans can already enjoy fishing, horse back riding, bird watching, and nature trails. Mineola officials are hoping people will be able to cruise down the river soon.
Vicki Gregg and her family are usuals at the preserve, and think this would be a great new addition. "I think it's a fantastic idea, theres already plenty of horse trails already, but kayaking would be great.. just what this area needs," said Gregg. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, this is a growing and inexpensive sport. "Its definitely a market and its growing and paddling is becoming really popular throughout the state as well," said Shelly Plante of the Texas Parks and Wildlife.
Rushing also sees this as a great opportunity for new businesses to come to East Texas , and said they're "hoping this is going to spark a whole new type of industry for the city of Mineola." Rushing also sees this as an opportunity for outdoor sports stores. "We not only see this as a great thing for the youth, and our citizens and tourism, but it is an economic development because we can see an entrepreneur might want to come in and start a business," said Rushing.
Everything will be finalized later this spring once Texas Parks and Wildlife survey the trail, and all of the surrounding area. They plan to launch the trail this October at the Mineola nature fest.
