Tyler Tx, (KETK) — A group of ladies, 55 and older, meet every Tuesday to dance up a storm at the Tyler Senior Center. They started this group, the "senior citizen cloggers", about two years ago at the center. It started with 7 ladies and has expanded to 15. Most of them, it's their first time ever clogging and it's grown to be a passion of theirs.
The two instructors were part of a clogging group a couple years ago, but it dwindled to nothing. They wanted to continue their love for dancing so they decided to come to the Tyler Senior Center to line dance. The director of the center asked them if they wanted to start a clogging group. Now, they practice every Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. They perform at nursing homes, once at the senior symposium and senior day at the fair. If your interested don't be intimidated, it's most of these ladies first time, and they learn and grow every week.
"It's good for your brain, and I've always enjoyed dancing and music and it's just a fun exercise and I enjoy doing it with the ladies and we do shows at different places and I love looking out at the happy faces and big smiles," said clogger Pam Bennett.
One of the instructors, Shelia Preddy, started clogging about 10 years ago.
"A friend of mine said hey there is a clogging class let's go try it and so we did and I've done it now for about 10 or 12 years and it's just fun,"said Preddy.
It quickly turned into a passion of hers.
"It's not like a dance discipline. It's more turn loose and do it and smile," said Preddy.
And you will always see a smile on Preddy's face when she clogs.
"My little neighbor after he saw that movie with the penguins dancing "Happy Feet" he said O look mommy Mrs. Preddy has happy feet! And so that's what they are, that's what you do, it's just a happy happy dance."
And the ladies love it.
"I think its more fun than just your plain everyday. It is something different. It moves quickly and I enjoy the rhythm of it all," said Bennett.
"There's lots of laughter, lots of messing up and we can all just laugh about it and enjoy what we're doing," said Preddy.
And why do they do it?
"All these women whose husbands won't dance that's why we clog our husbands won't dance with us(laughs)," said Preddy.
"We get to dance and have fun and leave them behind," said Bennett.
