TYLER (KETK) — Texas Highways, "The Travel Magazine of Texas," is counting down the Texas Top 40 travel destinations. One East Texas lake recently made the list.
Checking in at number 27 is Lake Fork near Quitman, Texas. The body of water made the list after Texas Highways' readers shared their favorite places in the state via phone, email, Facebook and even the old fashioned way, letters!
Lake Fork is located on the Sabine River in Hopkins, Rains and Wood Counties. It spreads 27,24 acres and reaches depths of up to 70 feet.
The predominant fish species found within the lake are largemouth bass, white and black crappie, channel catfish, white bass and sunfish, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife website. More than 65% of the Texas Top 50 largest bass, including the state record, were caught from Lake Fork.
Lake Fork is also home to this year's Toyota Texas Bass Classic on May 9-11.
The countdown is to commemorate the magazine's 40th year of publication. The list is currently at Number 24.
So far, only one other East Texas destination has made the countdown, Caddo Lake State Park at number 37.
