Texas (NBC) — The Texas teen who gave birth to a baby boy found abandoned in a Houston dumpster has been charged with child abandonment.
The identity of the 16-year-old who was arrested Thursday has not been released since she is a minor.
Baby Carlos was found by a maintenance worker at an apartment complex on February 25th.
Investigators say the teen admitted to placing the baby in the dumpster, but she thought the baby was dead.
The Harris County District Attorney, Devon Anderson, says while the charge carries a penalty of 2 to 20 years for adults, the teen may be eligible for a type of probation since she is a juvenile.
Anderson also says her office is now discussing whether to seek certification to have the teen stand trial as an adult.
A judge ruled in a custody hearing Friday that Carlos will remain in temporary custody of the state.
